Icons not in shortcuts

It is possible that icons are not set in the shortcuts when implementing a Network Executable or Shortcut. That is the case with Windows 8 and higher versions and is due to a Microsoft Group Policy. In that case, you will not find the icons for the shortcuts in the Start menu after you have implemented an installation item.

This Microsoft Group Policy (GPO) has been introduced in Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 and Windows RT.
We could not find a clear reason for this, but we suspect that it has something to do with security.

Solution

You can enable the GPO by running gpedit.msc and browsing to Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Explorer /

Allow the use of external paths in shortcut icons.
Set this to Enabled.

Alternatively, you can directly edit the registry here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Explorer

Create a DWORD (32-bit) with the name: EnableShellShortcutIconRemotePath with Value: 1 (Decimal).

After this, a restart is needed to activate the setting.

We are working to remedy this within Easy Software Deployment itself so that it is no longer necessary to set a GPO or edit the register. We will let you know as soon as this is available via our periodic emails. So make sure you receive them.

You can also stay informed of this by keeping an eye on our roadmap.
